End of road for difficult roadster bicycles?

CHENNAI: A mixture of factors have cut down the humble roadster segment’s share of the total cycle pie. City consumers are now upgrading to more premium solutions, whilst federal government spends – which fuelled demand at bottom of the pyramid – are flattening out. The moment commanding 50% of the Indian bicycle market, the roadster now accounts for just 30-35%. There has been infiltration from a lot of unbranded players way too. The organised market for roadsters has shrunk from almost 56 lakh models in 2018-19 to 50 lakh in 2020-21, according to main cycle maker Hero Motors Organization CMD Pankaj Munjal. Fall in governing administration-aided initiatives have performed a massive role also. Annual quantities from the All India Cycle Manufacturers’ Association (AICMA) display that govt buys of roadsters were being 3.7 million models in 2016-17, 4.8 million in 2017-18, once again 4.8 million in 2018-19 and 3.2 million units in 2019-20. “The decrease in 2019-20 was due to Covid-19 in the past quarter,” stated AICMA secretary general K B Thakur. “At the moment, roadsters in retail sales are declining and the fancy and kids’ bicycle sales are growing,” he additional. Cycle entrepreneurs hope the latest rush for personalized mobility will aid cycle sales – roadsters and if not.
